Barbed Fittings – General Information

Plastic barbed fittings suit tubing with an inner diameter of 1.6 mm to 25.4 mm, which allows to cover a broad range of processes and volumes. The tubing is usually fixed on the hose barb by a cable tie, but there are also alternatives like Oetiker clamps made of stainless-steel or clamping rings made of plastic like the BarbLock™ made by Saint-Gobain.

We offer two different versions of each plastic barbed fittings. The so-called QC-version, which is produced and also packaged in a certified ISO class 7 cleanroom. The other version is produced and packaged in a particle-reduced room but not in a certified cleanroom. Both consist of the same raw materials and are shipped with an extensive, batch-related certificate of compliance.

The most commonly used materials are polypropylene (PP) and Natural Kynar® (NK), which is a PVDF. The material should always be chosen depending on the requirements of the application. For instance, the Natural Kynar® has a high resistance against temperatures and also suits well for autoclaving processes. All materials have been tested exceedingly, are free of animal components and also compliant to USP Class VI. Samples certificates are available upon request.

The applications are numerous. The barbed fittings provide a secure and economical option to connect tubing with each other and secure them against unintended loosening.

Gamma sterilized single-use systems or autoclavable systems, which sometimes are used as multi-use systems, both utilize the advantages of barbed fittings. We recommend the material Natural Kynar® for autoclaving processes or processes with aggressive media or chemicals, since this material has a high resistance against temperature and chemicals.
