Piston Diaphragm Pump

Piston diaphragm pumps are used to transport fluid medium by using four piston diaphragms. This pump solution suits very well for pharmaceutical and biotechnological products. The piston movements are clocked and generate fluid motion by suppression, similar to a human heart. This piston diaphragms within the pump generate very low shear force. This allows a safe pumping of fluids containing cells, viruses and further shear-sensitive elements.

Function and efficiency of Piston Diaphragm Pumps

Pumping with a piston diaphragm pump allows very accurate transporting capacities. We offer different scalable pump models, which allow to transport volumes in the range of 1 to 20.000 liters per hour. Similar to the human heart, these pumps create a flow by suction and also suppression. This way, the liquids are transported very carefully and it is also prevented that the medium gets damaged by turbine blades or friction. For instance, peristaltic pumps create a continuous friction by rolling upon the tubing with their pump heads. This can decrease the life expectancy of cells during the product transfer.

Like in an automobile engine, the pistons move in a defined order and follow a certain cycle. Four driven pistons guarantee a continuous process of suction and also suppression. The drive is electrical and the constant cycle is archived by using an eccentric shaft. The pump diaphragm is made of EPDM or TPE thermoplastic elastomer. Our piston diaphragm pumps can be steam sterilized at up to 130°C and are also suitable for both, single-use and multi-use systems.

The single-use pumps are made of two essential parts. The pump itself, with its mechanics and also electronics, is one part and the single-use pumping chambers are the second. These pump chambers can easily be installed to the pump. This way, the compact plastic pumping chambers can already be built into a complete single-use assembly via Tri-Clamp connection, before being connected to the piston diaphragm pump, entirely free of any contamination.
